Chinese President Xi Jinping officially opened the 3rd World Internet Conference with a video message in which he promised China would work with the international community to ensure the common well-being of humanity in cyberspace.
Xi added that China will also uphold cyber sovereignty, promote fairer and equitable global internet governance and bring about an open, inclusive and secure cyberspace, featuring equality, mutual respect, innovation and orderly development.
Held for the third time in the town of Wuzhen in east China’s Zhejiang Province, this year’s World Internet Conference will showcase leading domestic technologies and achievements, as well as global net development.
The three-day event will be attended by delegates from over 120 countries, including leading internet figures, online celebrities, scholars and dignitaries, such as Liu Yunshan, a top leader in the Communist Party of China.
Business leaders from about 300 foreign and domestic Internet companies, including Chinese firms Baidu, Tencent, and Lenovo, will also be in attendance.
China’s hosting of the conference has raised questions, however, with advocacy group Freedom House rating it as the world’s worst abuser of Internet freedom in their 2015 Freedom on the Net survey partly because of the ‘Great Firewall’.
CNN reported that local Chinese web users have been mocking the name ‘World Internet Conference’, choosing to nickname it the ‘local area internet conference.’
